He enjoys watching Lions games on fall Sundays. Lansing - Govt. Gretchen Whitmer's lead over Republican Tudor Dixon has widened to 16 percent — up from 11 points a month ago — ahead of the Nov. 8 election, according to a new Free Press poll.

Over the past month, Dixon's favorability numbers have risen amid Democratic TV ads highlighting the candidates' positions on abortion rights.

If the election were held today, 55% of those surveyed said they would vote for Whitmer, a Democrat seeking a second four-year term. Dixon, a Norton Shores businessman and former Conservative TV reporter with no previous political experience, has 39% support. In an August poll by the same company, only 6% said they were unsure, down from 11%.

EPIC-MRA of Lansing's latest statewide poll was conducted by the Free Press and its state media partners between September 15 and 19. It sampled 600 voters in November and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. 70% of the survey participants who were interviewed live are connected via mobile phone.

Michigan Governor's Debate: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Tudor Dixon Face Off

Michigan's gubernatorial race hasn't had such a large poll lead since 2010, when Republican Rick Snyder had a similar lead over Democrat Virg Bernero and some polls had Snyder leading by as much as 20 points. Snyder, a political newcomer seen as a centrist, won that race by 18 points. No governor has held such a large polling lead since 1998, when polls showed Democratic challenger Jeffrey Fieger trailing Gov.

Typically, Michigan gubernatorial races tighten as Election Day approaches. Bernie Pohn, president of APIC-MRA, said that if Whitmer's support remains at or expands beyond 55%, the governor may have "coats" that could help Democrats in congressional and state legislative races.

Free Press polls show undecided voters have shifted to the Whitmer camp since August. At the time, Dixon's support was pegged at the same 39%, but he dropped 5 points to 50% for Whitmer.

The move was mostly tied to abortion, which was tied with inflation as a key election issue, respondents said. Each of these two issues was rated as an important issue by 24% of respondents, followed by education, jobs and the economy at 10% each. The Free Press reported in August that abortion and inflation would be key campaign issues for Whitmer and Dixon, respectively, but polls indicated that abortion had a more direct impact on race than inflation.

Whitmer Has Double Digit Lead Over Dixon In New Michigan Poll

The governor's widening lead is tied to the significant financial advantage Whitmer's campaign enjoys over Dixon's. Campaign finance reports filed earlier this month show Whitmer spent $15.8 million on his campaign, most of it on TV ads, and still had $14 million in the bank. Dixon spent more than $1.8 million and had only $524,000 to spend.

Whitmer "runs more ads and is in line with public opinion on almost everything," Pon said.

Whitmer supports abortion rights and a November ballot proposal that would enshrine those rights in the state constitution and repeal a 1931 law, still on the books, that criminalized all abortions except those that endanger the life of the pregnant woman. Dixon supports the 1931 law, saying he supports a ban on abortion with no exceptions for rape, adultery or the health of the mother. One exception to abortion, which Dixon said he supports, is to preserve the life of the mother.

52% of those surveyed had a favorable view of Whitmer and 44% had an unfavorable view. That's an improvement from August, when 48% had a favorable view of Whitmer and 43% had an unfavorable view.

When asked about Dixon, 24% had a favorable view of her and 44% had an unfavorable view. While Dixon's favorable rating improved slightly from 22% in August, her unfavorable rating rose nine points from 35% last month.

Whitmer's numbers improved despite the prevailing perception among voters that Michigan was headed in the wrong direction.

When asked about Michigan's economy, 60% gave a negative rating and 36% a positive rating — virtually unchanged from last month.

Meanwhile, 49% gave Whitmer a good job approval rating and 49% gave her a negative rating. In August, these numbers were 47-51.

Historic Federal Funding Is Coming To Michigan. Governor Whitmer Has A Plan To Invest It Wisely

Republicans sought to emphasize the strong relationship between Whitmer and Democratic President Joe Biden, who appeared with Whitmer at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week. But Biden, while unpopular, saw his numbers improve last month. It received a positive job approval rating from 35% of respondents and a negative job approval rating from 63%. In August, Biden's job approval numbers in Michigan were 30-69.

When asked about a 2024 rematch between Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump, 48% of respondents said they would vote for Biden, 44% said they would vote for Trump, and 8% were undecided or declined to say. Trump is planning an Oct. 1 rally in Macomb County for Dixon and other members of the Republican ticket. like
